1997Porsche
Ocean Blue Metallic
This two-owner 993 was bought in 2022 from a local Silver Sage and longtime PCA member. It’s entirely original; paint, interior, and engine, and shows about 78,000 miles. The paint is Ocean Blue Metallic with a beige interior. It’s driven often but shares time with my 912E. It’s auto-crossed several times a year also shared with the 912E. It originated from Carlsen Porsche Audi Volkswagen in Palo Alto California on February 3, 1997. It remained in California until 2019 when the previous owner moved to Boise. 993 Backstory Already owning a 912E and quite satisfied with my collection of Porsche’s and hot rod VW’s, there was something lacking. I wanted a modern (to me) 911 with dependability, reliability, and more horsepower; and with AC and heat and able to travel cross country at modern speeds and convenience. In 2012, I started looking for a 911. I tested a couple of 991’s, 997’s, and even a 996 40th anniversary addition. All very nice and fun to drive. Through my research however, what I desired was a clean 964 or 993 air-cooled…my roots! The problem is, there are lots of air-cooled 911’s out there for sale, but not many available locally. I was set on getting something, but I wasn’t going to buy sight unseen. I wanted to touch it, sit in it, and feel the car. I wanted to test drive the car and quiz the owner. I was content that the right one would someday become available only if I could muster the patience to wait. One day at a SSPCA drive, I was talking with the SSPCA President and casually mentioned my interest in buying a 993 or 964. At today’s prices however, I doubted that would ever become a reality…especially something local. It was left at that. Several months later, he texted me out of the blue and asked if I was still interested in a 993. He indicated a fellow Silver Sage member had one for sale. I met the owner at a Silver Sage Cruise-In event. When I saw the car, I knew immediately that this was the one! What were the odds…the exact model, color, interior, options, mileage, etc. I had been searching for; and local! Literally all the boxes checked! I decided to pursue purchasing the 993. I wanted to do a thorough and objective due diligence process. I met with owner and reviewed the service records and receipts during his ownership. I ordered a Carfax. We agreed to get a Pre-Purchase Inspection from a local Porsche air-cooled expert. Although I had to sell my prized 1967 VW Bus 13 Window Split, we negotiated a price and finalized the sale. Looking back, I’m glad I had the patience to wait for the right car and a local car. It’s worked out perfectly and I hope to enjoy my 993 for many years to come.
